Northumberland Sandwich Tern is "First" for USA

7th May 2014

A Sandwich Tern ringed on Coquet Island in 2002 as part of our ongoing seabird research
has caused a bit of a stir this year when it turned up at Cape Cod, Massachusetts, USA
and observers were able to read the ring number. This could well be the first confirmed
record of a Eurasian Sandwich Tern (recently split from the American Sandwich Tern/
Cabot’s Tern) across the pond. Due to the difficulties in telling the two species apart in
the field the ring on this bird provides conclusive evidence of this species in the USA.
