New development threatens Gosforth wildlife

29th November 2016

In September, Persimmon Homes submitted a planning application to North Tyneside Council to build 238 houses on Gosforth Business Park. The area that would be built on is directly opposite Gosforth Park Nature Reserve (across the main road from the reserve entrance). The application has mysteriously excluded a block of farmland in the middle of the site, even though the designs clearly indicate that the plan is to build on this as well at some point in the future. This would accommodate at least another 100 houses, meaning that the final impact would be around 350 units of housing and flats.

The Society has formally objected to the plans because they are contrary to the local plan and not in a suitable location for housing. We are also objecting because of flood risk, ecological impact, landscape impact and traffic. Thank you to those people who also took the time to respond directly to North Tyneside Council about this proposed development.

As we go to print, we are still waiting to hear when this application will go before the Council’s Planning Committee and what the Council Planning Officers’ response will be. We will keep members updated and would encourage you to attend the hearing once a date for this is known.
