1829 Talk: Sharks in the Maldives

Friday 11 October 2019.

With Danielle Robinson, Newcastle University

Widespread exploitation of sharks has resulted in substantial declines in shark populations, with 30% of shark species globally at risk of extinction. Almost half of shark species are data deficient and subsequently, the precautionary approach has resulted in vast shark sanctuaries in 17 countries. This interdisciplinary research is part of a long-term project to assess the impact and efficacy of shark sanctuaries. Spatio-temporal trends in shark abundance were mapped using Baited Remote Underwater Video (BRUV) and drivers of distribution identified to inform spatial management measures. Social surveys were conducted with fishers and key resource users to increase understanding of shark perceptions and local impact.
