Insects

The North East is home to a vast array of fascinating invertebrates. NHSN members play an important role in recording and monitoring insect species in Northumberland, Tyne & Wear and County Durham.

The NHSN Invertebrates Section is led by Dr Gordon Port, supported by entomologists and invertebrate enthusiasts across the North East.

If you would like to get more involved and help plan, organise or run a talk or field trip, we would love to hear from you. Please get in contact with us via the NHSN Office at nhsn@ncl.ac.uk.

The North East Bee Hunt

2020 saw the launch of the North East Bee Hunt, a new citizen science scheme aiming to reveal new information about bee distribution across the North East.

Urban or rural, beginner or expert, naturalist or nature lover, everyone can get involved with the North East Bee Hunt. Find out more and submit your bee records.

Every record counts! Whether you live in Northumberland, Tyneside, Durham or Teesside. No matter the size of your garden, we’d love you to get involved. Download the identification guide and join the North East Bee Hunt.

The Bumblebees of North East England

The first publication of its kind, Bumblebees of North East England provides a comprehensive overview of distribution, ecology and history of the twenty-two bumblebee species recorded in our region.

This 120-page publication also provides an overview of bumblebee recording in the North East, with a focus on the many dedicated naturalists who have contributed to our collective understanding of this popular yet tricky group. Additional sections cover the confusing species, bee-friendly gardening and bumblebee conservation, while the addition of striking photography and archive materials provides a highly visual reading experience.

Digital copies of this publication are available for purchase.
