On the right of this page you can see forthcoming talks, field trips and activities organised by the section. All Society members are very welcome to come along to these friendly events, whether you are a beginner or an expert. As well as plants we also see other wildlife!
If you are interested in learning more about plants then why not join one of our education courses? Our courses are a mixture of field outings and classroom sessions at the Great North Museum: Hancock. Click here for more details.
The Botany Section is led by Angus Lunn. If you would like to get more involved and help us to plan, organise or run a lecture or field trip for Society members then we would love to hear from you, please get in contact with us via the Society Office.
In May 2011 Chris Metherell (vascular plant recorder for North Northumberland) led the botany group to Plessey Wood, an ancient semi-natural woodland, long a destination for botany students. And very exciting was the trip to Carrifran, in Moffatdale in Dumfriesshire, in June 2011. This is the impressive large-scale woodland restoration project by the Borders Forest Trust, where an entire Borders valley is being planted with upland tree and shrub species, up to the natural tree-line. After a decade the woodland is maturing nicely, and, with the removal of sheep and goats, mountain plants are recolonising habitats right down to the valley floor. We were led by Dr Rod Corner (recorder for Selkirkshire and Roxbughshire), and were accompanied by Dr Chris Miles (recorder for Dumfriesshire) and by Philip Ashmole, who inspired the Carrifran wildwood project and told us the story of its inception and progress.
