The first official engagement of the newly decorated Council Room of the Natural History Society was to accommodate the Royal party during their visit to the museum.
Her Majesty and The Duke of Edinburgh relaxed and took refreshments in the Council room between activities, enjoying the distinctive furniture and artwork.
Situated on the top floor of the museum, the room is tastefully decorated, including an 1815 portrait of Thomas Bewick by James Ramsay, a 1850 bronze sculpture by John Hancock, and a marble bust of P. J. Selby, a founding member of the Society.
One of the most striking features is our circular table and distinguished chairs, specially designed and created for the Society when the museum originally opened in 1884, from the celebrated Newcastle workshop of Thomas Sopwith.
The room is the venue for our natural history courses, and has facilities such as a data projector and flipchart. The room is available for hire; an ideal venue for a boardroom meeting, easily seating 12 delegates around the table. Cost of hire varies depending on length of meetings, so please contact us for details.
Existing members will receive a discount for booking the room through the Society, using their membership number. A full range of catering options are available at extra cost from the museum’s catering service.
To book please contact the Society, where someone will be pleased to help you, on either (0191) 232 6386 or email us on nhsn@ncl.ac.uk
