Congratulations Chris!

6th December 2017

Congratulations to our trustee Chris Metherell, who started as the new president of the Botanical Society of Britain and Ireland (BSBI) on 25 November.

Chris has a lifelong passion for nature, starting with visiting his local library at the age of ten to ask for a book on flowers, then studying geography and geology at university. He joined the Wild Flower Society in 2000, then the BSBI in 2002. In 2006, Chris became the County Recorder for North Northumberland.

Chris’ other passion is education and he is a member of the BSBI Training & Education Committee. While president, he hopes to encourage people to make more use of herbaria:
“If we don’t use them we’ll lose them. We’ve lost some already”.

As well as his new role as president, Chris is working on a BSBI handbook on Eyebright. He is also looking forward to the New Year Plant Hunt in January.

We wish Chris all the best with his new role!
