We work hard to:

  • Protect and improve wildlife on our nature reserve and across the North East.
  • Help people of all ages to enjoy, learn about and care for the natural world.
  • Conserve our important natural history collections at the Great North Museum: Hancock.

Please help us to continue this important work. You can donate to fund a specific appeal or send us a general donation. Whether you want to give a one-off donation or help regularly through Direct Debit, we are grateful for any amount you can give us.

Sponsor a Farne Islands Arctic Tern

arctic-tern-with-geolocatorYou can sponsor your own bird for £120 which will pay for the purchase of a geolocator which we will fit to the leg of an Arctic Tern nesting on the Farne Islands. We will let you know which tern you have sponsored. Your tern will leave the Farnes in the summer and make an incredible migration to the Antarctic, eventually (and hopefully) returning to the Farne Islands the following spring to nest again. We will then recapture your bird and remove the geolocator which will tell us about its amazing migration. We will then share this data with you.  This is ground-breaking research and was featured in the national press and Springwatch in 2016 when the first group of birds returned with their geolocators.  To learn a bit more about this project click here or contact

You can sponsor your tern by donating £120 using the online form below or send a cheque for that amount payable to “Natural History Society of Northumbria”.
