Leave a legacy

Like any charity, in order to make a difference in the world we rely on kind donations. One way to support our work is to leave a legacy donation in your Will or to make a donation in memory of someone you love.

Members and friends of the Society have been donating money, books and collections for almost 200 years – and these are at the heart of the Great North Museum: Hancock in Newcastle, which is accessible to the public free of charge. We are always seeking new ways to help protect our native wildlife and to stimulate interest in the natural world: your legacy will help us to do this.

Facts about legacies

Leaving a legacy is usually a lot simpler than people think. There are a number of ways you can leave a legacy to us:

  • a specific amount of money
  • a percentage of your estate
  • leaving specific items
  • a family may wish to donate in memory of a loved one.

Any legacy you leave us will be free from inheritance tax and you could reduce the amount of inheritance tax due on your estate by leaving us a legacy.

“It was really easy to set up a legacy donation with the Natural History Society of Northumbria. I’ve been a Society member for many years and I think it’s really important that the Society’s invaluable work continues for future generations” – Ann Wilson

If you are thinking of leaving a legacy we would advise you to speak to your solicitor. You can find a solicitor at www.lawsociety.org.uk. If you do decide to give a legacy please include our charity number (526770).

Where your legacy can help

In your legacy you can make a general donation to our work or you can specify what you would like your money to go towards. Your gift can help the society in many ways, including:

  • protecting and maintaining Gosforth Park Nature Reserve and its wildlife;
  • helping to nurture the next generation of naturalists;
  • supporting research on species and habitats in our region;
  • providing opportunities for life-long learning through our natural history courses, indoor talks and field studies;
  • improving and conserving our important natural history collections, archives and library at the Great North Museum: Hancock.

“Setting up a fund in memory of our family has been a wonderful way to remember my childhood and recognise our family’s long association with the Society.” – Elisabeth Pestell

Previous legacy donations have helped us to:

  • build three wildlife viewing hides and carry out habitat improvements to Gosforth Park Nature Reserve;
  • provide annual grants for natural history research and conservation projects;
  • renovate the Hancock Museum.
