Gift membership

"My partner kindly gave me NHSN membership as a present. Since then we have visited Gosforth Park Nature Reserve. It was a wonderful experience for us, seeing our first starling murmuration there. NHSN and Gosforth Park Reserve...the gift that keeps on giving!" Chris Mullarkey, new NHSN member 2017.

This beautiful and peaceful nature reserve is one of the best wildlife watching sites in Tyne & Wear and is only open to our members and their families. There is a wetland, nature trails, wildlife watching hides and a feeding station.

Winter Lecture Programme

The Society holds weekly lectures, every Friday evening from October to March. Experts give entertaining and educational talks on a wide range of topics including plants, animals, birds, insects, geology and ecology.

Programme of Field Trips & Activities

Throughout the year local experts lead field meetings to explore the natural world and magical landscapes of northern England. These include outings in search of birds, mammals, plants, insects, geology and more.

Help Support Conservation & Research

We rely heavily on our members to help us protect and manage Gosforth Park Nature Reserve, to support our bird research and help maintain and preserve our important and historic natural history archive. We also actively involved in campaigning to protect wildlife and in helping others to learn about the natural world. A membership helps us to carry out all this essential work.

Natural History Courses

Our members can learn more about the natural world by enrolling on our education courses. Led by local experts, we run classes in birds, botany, mammals, geology, wildlife photography, astronomy and more. These are only available to our members but course fees do apply.

Use of the Society’s Library & Books

The Society’s library in the Great North Museum: Hancock contains the best collection of natural history books in the north of England, from modern field guides to old and historically valuable texts. Members have access to all these publications and can borrow up to 4 books at a time.

Newsletter Bulletin & e-mail updates

A member will receive three newsletter Bulletins a year with details of all the latest news, activities, talks, field trips and natural history courses. We also send out regular e-mail updates with information about activities and events going on in the North East.

The Society publishes two editions of its journal, Northumbrian Naturalist, each year: one volume, Northumberland Coastal Wildlife, and a second volume featuring papers on topics of regional interest. Back issues of these are also available for download from the members’ area of our website. Those members who have Full Membership will also receive a printed copy of both publications.
