What benefits do I get from joining the Society?

Benefits of being a member

Weekly Programme of Lectures in Winter

The Society holds lectures every Friday evening from October to March. Regional and national experts give entertaining and educational talks on a wide range of topics including plants, animals, birds, insects, geology and ecology.

Full Programme of Summer Field Meetings

Throughout the year local experts lead field meetings to explore the natural world and magical landscapes of Northern England.  Outings take place almost weekly from May to September.

Entry to Gosforth Park Nature Reserve

This peaceful nature reserve is one of the best wildlife watching sites in Tyne & Wear and is only open to our members and their families.  There are nature trails, wildlife watching hides and a feeding station from autumn to spring.

Use of the Society’s Reference Library & Books

The Society’s library in the Great North Museum: Hancock contains the best collection of natural history publications in the region, from modern field guides to old and historically valuable texts. Members have access to all these publications and can borrow up to 4 books at a time.

Memberships include the whole family!

All Society memberships are family memberships, and include 2 adults living at the same address, plus any children under 18 years old. Under 18s must be accompanied by an adult if they attend any of the Society activities, as the Society cannot take responsibility for unaccompanied children.

Newsletter Bulletin

You will receive three newsletter Bulletins a year with details of all the latest news, activities, talks, field trips and natural history courses.

Publications

The Society publishes two editions of the Northumbrian Naturalist journal each year.  They include an annual report of the ‘Birds on the Farne Islands’ and a volume of papers on topics of regional interest. These are available to download to all members from the Members Area of our website.  Those members who pay for the Full Membership also get a published copy sent to them.

Natural History Courses

You can really learn more about the natural world by joining one of our education courses.  These are only available to our members but course fees do apply.

Help Support Conservation & Research

We rely heavily on our members to help us manage Gosforth Park Nature Reserve and to support our bird ringing and coastal research.  We also maintain and preserve an important natural history archive which contains sketches by Thomas Bewick amongst others.  Your membership helps us to carry out this essential work.

Other Queries

We want to encourage and enable everyone to join our Society.  Special consideration is given to hardship circumstances.  If you wish to be considered for a reduced rate, please contact us.
