Prof. David Leat

Education, Bird Ringing Group

David advises/links on schools and education and is a former member of  the Bird Ringing Group.

David’s interests include birds and bird ringing, and forestry and woodland management. He is also a ringing trainer.

“I was a long term (20 years) member of the Ringing Group, through which my middle daughter via her experience
at Gosforth Park and researching Arctic Terns on the Farnes, progressed to get her PhD on Bonxies and become
the Seabird Scientific Officer on Ascension Island in the Atlantic Ocean.  She has overseen an amazing recovery
in the number of endemic Ascension Island Frigate birds nesting on the AI mainland.  Big thanks go to Chris Redfern
for the part he played in this – from small acorns!  I now ring in my own wood where the management plan is inspired
by the Natural History Society.

I believe that there is an important niche for the NHSN, in partnership with other organisations, in the more rounded
education of young people in schools, colleges and universities, in relation to wildlife, conservation and wider
environmental issues.”
