Derek is a Council member and Trustee, a member of the General Purposes Committee and the Library Committee. He is also Geology section lead and teaches NHSN’s popular geology classes.

His interests include geology, landscape history and general natural history.

Professionally, he holds and has held a number of positions:

  • Research Associate in geology at Durham University
  • Geographic Information Systems (GIS) I.T. lead for Durham University
  • IT Specialist: Web design, databases, email. Project Manager
  • Self-employed field guide and excursion organiser
  • Fellow of the Geological Society of London
  • Committee member and past Chair of the North East Geological Society

“My initial involvement with the society was quite low key. I attended evening lectures and the odd field trip. What attracted me
was the wide variety of natural history topics covered, not just my own specialism in geology. Everyone was very welcoming,
and helped answer my beginner’s questions about lichens, birds and toadstools. The expertise that some members have, still
astounds me. I hope that we remain a warm and diverse community, following a remit to bring our appreciation of all aspects
of natural history to as many people as possible.”
